When colour is the wrong answer

Some walls shouldn't be painted.

Plenty of property around Kent has brickwork worth looking at — period terraces, cottages, anything where the character is in the masonry itself. Covering that in a textured colour coating solves the water problem and destroys the building's face in the process.

A clear coating is absorbed into the surface of the brick rather than forming a film over it. Water then beads and runs off instead of soaking in, but the wall looks essentially unchanged: same colour, same texture, no sheen.

It is not a crack bridger. If your wall is moving or the render is failing, a clear sealer is the wrong product and we'll say so.

When a clear coating suits

  • Brick that has gone porous and darkens in rain
  • Damp appearing on an exposed elevation after rain
  • Sound masonry with no structural cracking
  • Somewhere a colour coating would look wrong

Sound brickwork only. If there's cracking or failed pointing, that gets repaired before anything is applied.

How we do it

Prepare, repoint, then seal.

A sealer is only as good as the surface underneath. Perished pointing lets water straight past whatever is on the brick face.

So the pointing gets sorted first, or the sealer is pointless.

    Assess the masonry

    Brick condition, pointing, any cracking or spalling, and whether a clear product is genuinely the right call.

  2. 02

    Repoint where needed

    Perished mortar raked out and repointed to match, because that's usually where water actually gets in.

  3. 03

    Clean down

    Algae and dirt removed so the sealer soaks into clean masonry rather than sitting on grime.

  4. 04

    Apply the sealer

    Worked into the surface at the specified coverage rate, with adjacent surfaces masked.

  5. 05

    Check it beads

    We test a section with water before finishing so you can see it working.

Clear wall coating questions

Will it change how the brick looks?
It shouldn't. A properly specified breathable sealer soaks in rather than forming a film, so there's no sheen and no colour change. We can test an inconspicuous area first if you'd rather see it.
How long does it last?
Less than a coloured coating, because there's no film sitting on the surface. Expect to revisit it periodically rather than treating it as a permanent fix, and we'll give you a realistic figure for your masonry.
Will it bridge cracks?
No. That's the trade-off. A clear sealer waterproofs sound masonry but does nothing about movement — for that you want a flexible coloured coating or a repair.
Can it be used on listed buildings?
Breathability is exactly the right property for older buildings, but consent is between you and the council. We'll advise on what's appropriate before you apply.
Is it worth it if my pointing is bad?
Not on its own. Water gets in through failed mortar joints far more readily than through the brick face, so repointing comes first.
