Meet the teamRochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Strood. A lot of our work comes out of Medway, and the housing here has a very particular set of damp problems.
Rochester and Chatham have some of the oldest housing stock in Kent — a great deal of it pre-1900, built with solid walls and either no damp proof course at all or a slate one that gave up decades ago. Gillingham and Strood add Victorian and Edwardian terraces on top of that.
Add the chalk and clay subsoil, the exposure coming off the Medway estuary, and a century of ground levels creeping upward as paths and patios get relaid, and you have close to a textbook set of conditions for rising and penetrating damp.
Twenty minutes from our Gravesend base along the A2 or A226, so Medway is somewhere we're in most weeks.
Plenty of pre-1900 Medway property was built without one, or with a slate course that's cracked along its length. A tide mark with salt staining above it is the giveaway.
A century of relaid paths and new patios means the outside ground often sits above the internal floor, bridging whatever damp course does exist. Sometimes lowering the path is the whole fix.

West and north-facing elevations taking weather straight off the estuary. Render cracks, water gets behind it, and it shows up inside as a patch that comes and goes with the rain.

Tide marks and salt staining on ground floor walls. We inject a new damp proof course using the SecoMUR system, guaranteed 30 years, then replaster with a salt-inhibiting render.
